Overview

The TDM Calculator was created by Hack For LA in collaboration with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning (LACP). Hack for LA is a local non-profit organization making an impact in Los Angeles through building digital products, programs and services using Lean-Agile methodology and user centered design.

My Role

I'm part of a 4-person UI/UX design team. We meet weekly with developers and product managers to discuss project goals, and also have a separate meeting with stakeholders to brainstorm and refine changes.

Issue

The filter button (icon) on my project page needs to be redesigned so that the button to open and close the filter slide-in remains in the same position.

Action Items

  •  Change the funnel icon (e.g to an arrow)

  •  Let the placement of the icon change with the user's interaction (e.g right facing to open, left facing to close

Draft Solution 3

Approach

After consulting with the team, I recognized that merely changing the filter button wouldn't be the optimal solution. Attending the stakeholder meeting provided valuable insights into the actual pain points. Presenting three draft solutions, the team collectively decided on implementing the third option for an effective resolution.

Before

Prototype

After multiple rounds of user testing and stakeholder meetings, the finalized version has been sent over to the development team. The team's feedback has been exceptionally positive and encouraging. They appreciate my ability to swiftly implement design changes, offer multiple solutions to problems, and make quick decisions and suggestions during meetings. Currently, I am still actively engaged in the project, addressing the next design challenge. I thoroughly enjoy the creative process and look forward to the opportunity to contribute to your team's ongoing success.

After

Result

The prototype received overwhelmingly positive user feedback, particularly in terms of usability. The stakeholders express satisfaction with the update, emphasizing the notable improvement compared to the original version. Notably, our metrics show a significant reduction in user confusion regarding actions. This positive outcome underscores the success of the redesign in enhancing user experience and stakeholder approval.
